The 22xx hierarchy
The model number roughly corresponds to wattage. The 2270 is 70 watts per channel, the 2325 is 125 watts. Higher wattage generally means higher value, but not linearly. The 2270 is the sweet spot of the line: it's the most recognized model, parts are available, and it sounds excellent. The 2325 and 2285B command higher prices but are rarer and harder to service correctly.
What the wood case is worth
Marantz sold matching walnut cases separately as accessories. An original WC-22 in good condition adds real money to a 2270 sale. Reproductions exist. Look for the original Marantz badge on the case and grain consistency. A cracked or damaged original case is worth less than a clean reproduction.
Buying notes
The gyro-touch tuning mechanism on 22xx receivers is a common failure point. Ask whether it's been serviced. The tuning string can stretch and slip. The power switch contacts corrode. A unit that's been properly recapped and has a working gyro-touch is worth paying a premium for.
