The SX-1250 situation
A few years ago on AudioKarma, members were complaining about SX-1250 prices hitting $1,500. Now it's hard to find a clean working example for under $2,500, and restored units regularly list at $4,000 and up. YouTube coverage of monster receivers drove mainstream awareness, the supply of working units keeps shrinking as capacitors fail and units get damaged in shipping, and the demographic that remembers these receivers from childhood now has disposable income.
Whether that's a bubble or a new floor is an open question. The equipment is genuinely good. But some of what you're paying for is a story.
What to check before buying
Every Pioneer SX from the 1970s is now 45 to 50 years old. The electrolytic capacitors have a finite life and most are past it. A unit that plays music today may fail within months if the capacitors haven't been replaced. Budget $200 to $400 for a full recap if buying an unrestored unit, and factor that into your offer.
The dial lamps on most SX receivers have been replaced with LEDs by previous owners. This is fine and doesn't affect value much either way.
Sellers who say "just recapped" without providing a shop name or invoice deserve skepticism. Recap quality varies enormously. A proper recap uses branded capacitors from a reputable supplier. Ask for specifics before buying.
The SX-780 is worth calling out separately. It's a smaller receiver at 45 watts per channel and doesn't get the same attention as the flagships. That makes it the best value in the SX line for someone who wants the look and the sound without paying flagship prices.
